Class Times: Orange Days, block 4
Course Description: American Sports Literature and media is a writing intensive, semester course that will give students the opportunity to explore various forms of contemporary and historical literature having to do with sports in America. The focus will be on non-fiction writing in mediums such as books, magazines, newspapers, as well as several other electronic sources. Students will analyze the role that literature plays in America’s favorite pastimes, and will be required to create and present several forms of their own unique forms of American Sports Literature and Media.
Course Texts:
Unit 1: Friday Night Lights (5 Weeks)
Students will read the book that has spawned a television show and a movie. Within the unit, students will watch excerpts from both the show and the movie, and compare and contrast how these scenes relate to similar scenes in the book.
Assessments: Reading check quizzes, end of unit compare/contrast essay

Unit 2: Fall River Dreams (5 Weeks)
Students will read an often overlooked, yet classic story of a small town high school basketball team, and the role that team plays in the community. Students will also analyze the impact of the “season with the team” format of Fall River Dreams and other similar books.

Students will explore issues surrounding college athletics, and what “amateurism” really means. Experiences from current and former college athletes will be shared in class, and students will gain a greater understanding of athletics at the next level.

Students will examine the role of coaching in contemporary athletics, and will read and analyze a book of their choosing about a coach of their choosing. Students will learn what it takes to be a coach, and how to successfully deal with many issues that coaches face today.
